Antigua and Barbuda has secured a sustainability partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative as preparations continue for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled to take place in the country from November 1 to 4.
The partnership will see the Sustainable Markets Initiative serve as the exclusive sustainability partner of the Commonwealth Business Forum, one of the official events associated with the high-level Commonwealth gathering.
The initiative will also support several activities connected to CHOGM, including One Commonwealth Night, a cultural event intended to showcase the diversity and creativity of Commonwealth countries. Other planned activities include the Commonwealth Leaders Cricket Match, which will bring together leaders and young people through sport.
The partnership reflects the importance of incorporating sustainability into major international gatherings. As countries face growing concerns about climate change, energy security and economic resilience, organizers are increasingly seeking ways to make international events more environmentally responsible while encouraging investment and cooperation.
For Antigua and Barbuda, hosting CHOGM offers an opportunity to attract international attention, strengthen diplomatic relationships and promote investment opportunities.
The meeting is expected to bring together Commonwealth leaders and other representatives to discuss issues affecting member states. For small island nations, these discussions are particularly relevant to climate financing, economic development, trade and the protection of vulnerable communities.
The involvement of the Sustainable Markets Initiative could also help connect government priorities with private-sector expertise and investment.
The partnership comes at an important time for Antigua and Barbuda as it prepares to host a major international event and seeks to demonstrate how sustainability can be incorporated into economic development.
