Guyana: Man shot after allegedly pointing gun at Police rank on Schoonard Highway

A 27-year-old man was shot and injured after he allegedly pointed a firearm at a Police rank on the Schoonard Highway, West Bank Demerara on Wednesday night.

Police Headquarters confirmed the incident occurred between 13:45 hrs and 14:00 hrs at Schoonard Highway, West Bank Demerara.

In a statement, Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the rank, attached to the La Parfaite Harmonie responded to a report of a man walking along the Schoonard Highway with what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waist.

Upon arrival, Police Headquarters said the rank approached the man, who allegedly pulled the object from his waist and pointed it in the direction of him.

During the incident, the rank discharged one round. The man reportedly dropped the object and fled into a nearby trench and rice field.

He was subsequently apprehended and was observed with what appeared to be a gunshot wound under his left armpit.

Police said the man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains under Police guard.

“The object recovered at the scene was identified as what appeared to be a black Glock air gun and was lodged as part of the investigation,” Police Headquarters said, in a statement.

Investigations are ongoing.
