The price of liquefied petroleum gas is not expected to increase as part of the Government’s imminent adjustment to fuel prices.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the administration is dealing specifically with gasoline and diesel, while propane remains under price control.
He acknowledged that West Indies Oil Company has pressed for a higher price for cooking gas for years and said the current arrangement has generated losses.
Nevertheless, the Government has deliberately kept the price down because of the product’s importance to households.
The assurance comes as motorists prepare for an increase at the pumps following months of Government intervention to absorb higher international petroleum costs.
Browne said the broader fuel subsidy had become unsustainable because the State was both forgoing taxes and paying the supplier to preserve existing prices. Cooking gas, however, will continue to receive protection under the present policy.
