Police investigations have uncovered several cases in which box-hand holders allegedly fabricated robbery and burglary reports to conceal missing money.
Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisborn Michael, said some individuals entrusted with box-hand funds allegedly misappropriated the money before reporting that they had been robbed.
Others claimed their homes had been broken into and the box-hand money stolen.
Michael said thorough investigations subsequently revealed that several of the reports were false.
“From time to time, we receive quite a number of reports that are false,” Michael said. “Holders of box monies misappropriate those funds and report to the police that they were robbed or that their homes were broken into and the money was stolen.”
Individuals linked to the fabricated reports were charged with public mischief.
Michael said some of the cases have already been dealt with by the courts, while others remain pending.
