The Ministry of Agriculture’s internship programme continued with an informative and interactive beekeeping session, where interns learned about the importance of bees, hive management and the essential role beekeepers play in supporting agriculture and food security.
The presentation was led by one of the programme’s own mentors, Koden Adams, with guidance and support from Mr. Brent Georges/Project Coordinator within the Ministry of Agriculture and an experienced beekeeper. Mr. Georges highlighted Koden’s growth in the field, commending him for his dedication and confidence in delivering the presentation. He encouraged the interns to continue learning and expressed his hope that many would return to the internship programme next year to mentor future participants.
During the session, the interns were introduced to the basic equipment used in beekeeping, including the smoker, hive tool, bee suit, gloves and queen cage. They learned how smoke helps to calm bees during hive inspections, the purpose of each tool, and the importance of wearing proper protective equipment and following safety procedures while working around bees.
The interns also explored the structure of a beehive and the different roles of the queen, worker and drone bees. They learned how bees collect nectar and pollen, how honey is produced, and how pollen is used to make bee bread, the primary source of protein for developing bees. The presenters also explained why beekeepers should never remove all the honey from a hive, as bees rely on their stored food during dry periods when flowers are scarce.
Following the presentation, Mr. Georges led the interns on a short walk to observe active beehives. Although approaching the hives was optional, participants who joined the tour had the opportunity to safely view the colonies and gain a closer appreciation of beekeeping in practice.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mr. Georges praised the interns for their attentiveness, thoughtful questions and enthusiasm throughout the session. He also commended Koden Adams for the excellent job he did leading the presentation, noting the progress he has made as a young beekeeper and mentor. The experience gave the interns valuable practical knowledge and a greater appreciation for the important role bees play in agriculture and the environment.
