The high-profile murder case against Angela Mejia, the woman accused of killing nine-year-old Chantel Crump, faced a dramatic moment in court this morning when her attorney formally requested that the matter be thrown out.
Attorney Wendel Alexander confirmed to Antigua.news that he applied for the case to be dismissed for want of prosecution, citing repeated delays and the unavailability of critical documents necessary to advance the committal proceedings.

“There were six previous adjournments and the case file was not available. These files are necessary for the committal proceedings,” Alexander said following the hearing.
The matter came before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, who declined to dismiss the case but granted what she described as one final, short adjournment. The court was told that the file is currently with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case has now been adjourned until March 18. Mejia remains on remand at His Majesty’s Prison.
Alexander stressed the urgency of bringing the matter to trial, noting the intense public interest and scrutiny surrounding the case. He argued that the prolonged delays have caused significant prejudice to his client, who has been in custody since her initial court appearance.
Mejia was charged following the grim discovery of Chantel Crump’s naked body in the Weatherills area on March 15, 2025. The nine-year-old had reportedly been taken by a woman in a vehicle near her home days earlier, triggering a wave of panic and a frantic search across communities.
From the moment Chantel was reported missing, residents mobilized in droves, sharing her photo, combing neighborhoods, and demanding answers. The discovery of her body intensified national grief and outrage, with candlelight vigils, church services, and emotional appeals from citizens calling for justice.
Yet nearly a year later, key questions remain unanswered.
