A Sutherlands resident has admitted to unlawfully possessing an extensive weapons cache that included an untraceable firearm and ammunition capable of being used in multiple weapons systems.
Daquan George entered a guilty plea on Monday before Senior Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel to charges of illegal firearms and ammunition possession. Attorney Wendel Alexander represented George during the court appearance.
The charges follow a July 31st police operation in which officers executed a search warrant at George’s Sutherlands home. What they discovered raised significant concerns about public safety.
Police seized an unmarked .22 caliber firearm with no serial number, making it impossible to trace. The weapon was found alongside six magazines designed for various firearms, including three Smith and Wesson magazines, one AK-47 magazine, one Glock magazine, and one 9mm Sig Sauer magazine.
The ammunition recovery proved equally troubling. Officers found 140 rounds of mixed calibers stored in a bag at the residence.
Following his guilty plea, George was remanded to custody.
Magistrate Emanuel transferred the matter to the High Court for sentencing, marking the first time the Firearms Amendment Act of 2024 has been invoked for such a purpose. The new legislation empowers magistrates to elevate cases to the High Court when they determine the offenses are so serious that the sentencing power of the Magistrate are not sufficient to deal with the offender
