ECAB launches MasterCard suite with American Airlines partnership

The Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) has launched a new suite of MasterCard credit cards in partnership with American Airlines Advantage programme, offering four distinct options designed to meet diverse customer needs from everyday spending to premium travel benefits.

The cards were unveiled at a launch event at Tradewinds Hotel last week Thursday, bringing together ECAB’s board of directors, executive management, and representatives from both MasterCard and American Airlines.

ECAB’s Cards Services Manager Carol Martin said the new offerings represent months of strategic planning and collaboration. The suite includes the Standard card with cashback rewards, the Gold card featuring one percent instant cashback and MyRewards platform access, and two premium travel cards, the Platinum and Black, which integrate directly with American Airlines Advantage programme.

“After months of hard work, collaboration and strategic planning, the moment we have all been waiting for has arrived,” Martin said. “Today, we are proud to unveil four uniquely curated ECAB MasterCard credit cards, each designed with the diverse needs of our customers in mind.”

The Standard and Gold cards cater to everyday spending, with the Gold offering access to MyRewards, an international platform where customers can redeem points for hotels, travel shows, airline tickets, and online purchases, including Amazon.

The two premium cards allow holders to earn one Advantage mile and one loyalty point for every dollar spent, building toward flights, upgrades, and elite status within American’s tiered system.

Annual fees range from US$135 for the Standard card to US$324 for the Black card, with the premium option including worldwide airport lounge access through LoungeKey.

ECAB Chief Executive Officer Michael Spencer emphasized that the premium cards are not exclusively for business executives or frequent travellers, with eligibility based on credit assessment and income qualification.

“Not limited to just businessperson,” Spencer said. “If you have a propensity to travel, you get the points, but you can also share them with your family members.”

He explained that cardholders can accumulate points through regular spending and transfer those benefits to family members who travel more frequently.

Spencer positioned the launch within the broader context of digital payment transformation across the Caribbean.

“We live in a world where convenience, speed, and security are no longer optional. They are expected,” Spencer said. “And as our economies continue to evolve and become increasingly digital, the way people manage money is also evolving.”

He described the launch as a reflection of ECAB’s vision and commitment to innovation, signalling the bank’s intention to continue leading the financial services industry in Antigua and Barbuda.

American Airlines International Co-Brand Business Development Manager Sarah Ferreira said the partnership, which began in 2021, has created value for customers, ECAB, and the airline.

“Since 2021, American Airlines, through our Advantage programme, has teamed up with ECAB to transform the way customers in Antigua and Barbuda earn miles, enjoy travel rewards, and access elevated experiences,” Ferreira said.

She explained that the loyalty points system helps cardholders progress through American’s status levels from gold to platinum to executive platinum, each tier offering enhanced travel benefits including early boarding and premium services.

“With every purchase, cardholders earn Advantage miles and loyalty points. The loyalty points get you status,” Ferreira said. “So, with this, we take the customers closer to their next vacation and a better travel experience, because with status, you get a better travel experience, you get early boarding, and all of the premium experience that our customers deserve.”

MasterCard’s Country Manager for Jamaica, the Eastern Caribbean, and Barbados, Dalton Fowles, participating via video presentation, said the partnership reflects MasterCard’s ongoing commitment to investing in the region’s digital future.

“Our partnership with the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank has been growing steadily over the past few years. And I’m really excited that this speciality is finally here,” Fowles said. “This launch reflects MasterCard’s ongoing commitment to the region, investing in its digital future.”

He noted that the collaboration aims to expand access to secure digital payments, support financial inclusion, and help more people and businesses benefit from modern, reliable financial tools.

Customers can apply for the cards at any ECAB branch or initiate applications through the bank’s website.

Spencer indicated that fully online applications will be available in the future.

As a launch incentive, new cardholders receive bonus points upon enrolment, with 3,000 bonus points for the Standard card and 5,000 points for the Platinum and Black cards. Martin said additional promotional activities will be rolled out to increase public awareness.
