Man arrested at airport with suspected cannabis

A 40-year-old Antiguan national was arrested at the V.C. Bird International Airport on Friday afternoon following a drug interdiction operation.

The man, a returning resident from Bethesda Village, arrived on United Airlines flight UA2020 at approximately 3:30 p.m. when he was stopped by officers from the Narcotics Department, K9 Unit, and Customs Enforcement Unit conducting a joint operation.

According to reports, officers searched a Nautica suitcase belonging to the traveler and allegedly found two transparent tubes containing a greenish bushy substance suspected to be cannabis concealed among clothing.

The substance weighed approximately 22 grams and had an estimated street value of $291 in Eastern Caribbean currency.

The man was taken to Police Headquarters along with the suitcase and suspected drugs for further investigation.

Authorities continue to conduct similar drug interdiction exercises at the airport as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Antigua and Barbuda.
