Work on the new Five Islands Primary School is expected to start shortly, Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant has said.
Speaking about the project, Merchant confirmed that the contractor has been mobilised and heavy machinery is on site. “Within two to three weeks, you should see some activity there,” he added.
The groundbreaking for the facility took place in January. The school forms part of a US$80 million expansion of the UWI Five Islands Campus, funded by the Saudi Arabia Development Fund.
The current primary school will be demolished to make way for the new, climate-resilient building, which will feature 19 classrooms, kindergarten and preschool spaces, a library, IT laboratory, modern kitchen, sports facilities, counselling rooms, and faculty lounges. The campus, spread over 10 acres in Five Islands Village, is designed to accommodate 600 students.
