In a landmark effort to shape the future of Caribbean logistics, Tropical Shipping, in collaboration with PMAC (Port Management Association of the Caribbean) and the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority (ABPA), proudly held the official launch of a Maritime Apprenticeship Program on Monday 21 st July 2025.
This initiative reflects a bold commitment to workforce development, industry safety, and youth empowerment. The program will provide young Antiguans and Barbudans with hands-on training in port operations, logistics management, and maritime safety, preparing them for high-demand careers across the shipping and transportation sector.
“At Tropical Shipping, we pride ourselves on being more than carriers of cargo; we are carriers of potential. This program is born out of our shared belief—alongside PMAC and the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority—that true industry transformation begins with investing in people.” said Tamara Lowe-James, Island Manager of Tropical Shipping. “This is no ordinary internship. This is mentorship. Exposure. Connection.”
CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, Mr. Darwin Telemaque adds, “As the industry evolves, creating new and interesting dimensions, so too must the workforce. At PMAC, ‘Humanization’ is one of the key development pillars within the Port ecosystem.”
The Apprentices, selected through a vetting and interview process, will participate in a comprehensive 6-week program that includes two weeks at Tropical Shipping, two weeks at the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority and two weeks working with one of three participating Companies: Pastry’s Ltd, Go To Enterprise and Koscab Distribution.
The rational structure will provide a complete 360-degree view of the port operations and logistics, giving the Apprentices invaluable hands-on experience in the maritime industry.
