The Go Compose Eastern Caribbean Workshop — which presents an opportunity for young composers, instrumentalists, songwriters, jazz musicians, and pan players culminating in a Gala Concert — will open at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on July 14th.
Alison Cox, the Founder and Trustee of Commonwealth Resounds and Head of Composition at the Purcell School in Bushey-Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, stated that the program began in 2018 when the emerging talent and young composer Khadijah Simon from Antigua and Barbuda took part in the event at the age of 14.
“She was among seven young composers who participated in the program, and we were impressed, thinking this young individual possesses talent. Indeed, she created remarkable pieces, and her music led her to be shortlisted in an international competition due to her involvement in this program. Furthermore, she has undertaken numerous projects, and we have provided her with many opportunities. We have requested her to share her compositions with us on several occasions for esteemed events, including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Simon said she began her journey in music at the age of eight, however at the age of 14, she heard about the Go Compose workshop and attended.
“I believe it was the High Commissioner, that would have informed me about it, and I participated because I have always had a passion for composing. During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet many talented musicians,” she stated.
Simon remains engaged in music composition and has amassed a significant collection of original works spanning multiple genres. Additionally, she is currently in the midst of planning an album for the near future. She expressed that if she could gain from this program, then others who share her passion can as well, which is why they should consider enrolling.
