International Fruit Day 2025 by Shenequa Williams
Every year on July 1st, the world celebrates International Fruit Day, a global event that brings people together through the simple joy of sharing fruit. First launched in Berlin in 2007, the day promotes healthy eating, sustainability, and cultural connection, one juicy bite at a time.
The theme for 2025 is “Inclusive Styles”, inviting everyone, no matter their background, to embrace the universal language of fruit. This year’s Fruit of the Year is the orange, loved for its bright flavor and health benefits. Rich in vitamin C and full of zest (literally), it represents the energy and warmth we all need more of.
Here in Antigua and Barbuda, International Fruit Day is a bunch of fun. Thanks to our rich variety of local fruits. From mangoes and guavas to coconuts and soursop, our tropical treats are always in season. But nothing steals the show quite like the Antigua Black Pineapple, known as the sweetest pineapple in the world and proudly grown along the island’s southern coast.
To mark the day, Antiguans are encouraged to “go bananas” with fruit-themed picnics. The Ministry of Agriculture continues to promote fruit as a healthy daily habit, with a special focus on “Fruiti Tuesdays.”
More than just a snack, fruit is a symbol of connection, culture, and care. Whether you are sharing an orange slice with a friend or serving fresh pineapple at a beach lime, you are helping to spread the spirit of unity.
So, this July 1st, let us make a peel for togetherness and celebrate International Fruit Day the Antiguan way, with flavor and fun!
