Prime Minister Urges Reversal of Egg Price Hike, Threatens to Open Market to Imports

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is calling on the Layer Farmers Association to reconsider its decision to raise egg prices in Antigua and Barbuda, criticizing the move as “opportunistic wickedness” and urging compassion for the poor.

Starting September 16, 2024, the price of eggs will increase from $12.00 to $14.00 per dozen, with a case rising from $360.00 to $420.00. The association cites rising input costs as the reason for the hike.

Browne warned that if the association does not reverse its decision, the government may allow egg imports to help lower prices. The last price increase was in July 2022.
