Controversy Over Airport Name: Burton Family Advocates for Legacy Preservation

In a move to honor cultural legacies, the family of Sir Eric Burton requests the removal of his name from Barbuda's new airport, suggesting recognition solely for Arthur Nibbs.

Barbuda’s new international airport, set to open on October 3, 2024, was originally named the “Burton-Nibbs International Airport.” Recently, however, the family of the late Sir Eric Burton has requested that his name be removed from the facility.

In a letter to the government, the family expressed a desire to preserve Sir Eric’s legacy as a cultural custodian, emphasizing that his contributions extended well beyond infrastructure.

They recognized Arthur Nibbs’ significant role in the airport’s development and proposed that he be acknowledged as the sole namesake for the project
