Flow of marijuana into Antigua and Barbuda continues, as two shipments, valued at nearly $1.4 million, are seized

Charges are likely to be laid against two people who are in custody in relation to a drug seizure at the Deep Water Harbour on June 17.

The Police say that investigations continue into the discovery of 131 pounds of cannabis on Friday during a joint operation with the Customs Department.

They discovered two barrels containing 162 sealed cans and 11 vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis hidden among food items.

A woman from Yorks New Extension and a man from Gunthorpes were arrested and taken into custody in relation to this most recent drug seizure, which is reported to carry an estimated street value of $1,048,000.

It follows a similar interdiction exercise on June 16, at the V.C. Bird International Airport Cargo/FedEx storage shed, which involved officers from the Drug Squad and Customs Task Force.

During that operation, four brown cardboard boxes were searched, and a total of 57 vacuumed-sealed packages were found, each containing the Class “B” drug, cannabis.

Reports are that the drugs weighed 57 pounds, with an estimated street value of $342,000. The boxes were seized and transported to Police Headquarters pending further investigations.

Meanwhile, two other people are expected to appear before the court this week after being charged with drug possession.

Reports say that police officers executed a search warrant at the Donovans home of a well-known man and his girlfriend, and they found cannabis and cannabis plants being grown.

The duo was taken into custody on suspicion of drug possession and transported to the St. John’s Police Station.

This operation was conducted on June 16 with assistance from the Criminal Investigations Department and the K-9 Unit.(Real News)
