Tourism Minister to discuss the impact of Russia on our nation’s CIU

Tourism Minister Charles Max Fernandez will meet with the Hotel and Tourism association today, March 7, to discuss the impact of a decision by the Citizenship by Investment Unit CIU to temporarily ban the acceptance and processing of any new citizenship from Russia, Belarus or Ukraine.

In a statement Friday, the Unit said it has been advised by its due diligence providers that – due to the ongoing situation in that region – their ability to conduct investigations has been severely affected.

Max expressed that, “the impact of persons from Russia altered at this time from CIP application would not, in my opinion, be significant because very few Russians come to Antigua and Barbuda as tourists.”

He also thinks that the high price of oil will have a greater impact on the industry since it will affect fares in cruise and air.

“Ät this time I have no information regarding cancellation or fares heights. I will meet with the chairman of the Hotel Association and get an update with regards to what is happening at this time,” Minister Fernadez stated.
