13 people have died after falling into a well during a wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh State, Kushinagar, New Dehli, on Wednesday. The nation is still trying to grasp the reality of the incident, which is especially horrifying given that all the victims were women and children-the youngest just the tender age of one.
Reports state that the persons were all sitting on a slab covering the well when it gave way and collapsed. The other guests immediately ran to rescue the victims and took them to a nearby hospital. 11 people were declared dead immediately, and two others died later during treatment. At least two other people were badly injured. The victims were not immediately identified.
“This is an unfortunate incident during a wedding ceremony,” said Kushinagar’s senior police official Sachindra Patel, adding they are investigating the case.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the deaths “heart-wrenching” in a post on Twitter on Thursday.
“I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives,” he said “I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The local administration will help in every possible way.”
He later announced a compensation of $2,662 to each of the victims’ families, and $665 to the injured. Furthermore, Kushnigar district authorities announced an additional $5,323 to each of the victim’s families, News-18 said.
