The Minister of Labour Steadroy Benjamin informed the Cabinet of the challenge to find a reasonable method in dealing with sick leave taken by COVID-19 infected workers.
The Cabinet said the recommendations of the International Labour Organization and the Caribbean Congress of Labour will be examined adding that there must also be consultations with the national unions and employers to reach a reasonable settlement of the issues that will likely be taken to Parliament.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas spoke on the matter recently.
“The whole issue of absences due to COVID infection, there are several issues that come up in relation to it and the ministry of Labour in the coming days or weeks will engage stakeholders certainly in the private sector and unions as to what is the best treatment for this type of arrangement.”
Nicholas identifies that the situation has been recognized and the Ministry of Labour has undertaken to provide that leadership in the discussion before any final decisions can be made.
