There are various reasons why kids leave their families and seek sanctuary elsewhere, according to Fiona Charles-Richards, Acting Director of the Family and Social Services Division.
Ms Charles-Richards was responding to complaints of missing youths, which have been more common in recent months, with at least three fleeing houses in a week.
According to the Acting Director, this is due to socio-economic difficulties, changing family dynamics, and even mental health issues among the adolescent population.
She claims that abuse plays a factor in these teenagers’ decision to leave home.
Adolescence, according to Charles-Richards, has grown harder as teenagers strive to find out who they are based on what they have been exposed to or experienced, which may be difficult.
She claims that most kids attempt to fit in and that this may be especially risky for girls, who are more likely to have sexual relations with considerably older men.
