Cabinet still assessing the possible reopening of schools

The recent increase in Coronavirus cases could delay the reopening of schools.

Recent data from the Ministry of Health reveals that at least seven children between the ages of 1 to 11 are currently infected with the virus.

Information Minister Melford Nicholas says the Cabinet is still assessing the situation as schools are due to reopen in a matter of weeks.

He said several private learning institutions have come forward to plead their case should the government decide to delay the reopening of schools.

“We have certainly been presented with cases where some of the private schools have indicated that nearly all of their faculties have been vaccinated. In accordance with that, they believe that if any consideration is to be given about schools remaining close and going to an online format that consideration could be given.”

“Where it can be demonstrated that the faculties are 100% vaccinated then they will ask for consideration that they be allowed to continue in-person schooling and the Minister of Health has indicated likely support of that. But we have not yet completed the process of making a determination for September whether or not we will go back to the in-person presentation,” Nicholas added.

“If there is to be a curtailment of any portion of the school it will probably be in the lower half but it is too early to say at this particular point in time,” Minister Nicholas ended.
