US halts trade between Myanmar amid barbaric violence

The United States has imposed a moratorium on an important trade agreement with the country, making the restoration of a democratic government in Myanmar a necessary condition. The US is also imposing separate economic sanctions on Myanmar.

US Trade Representative Katherine Tye said in a statement, “The US supports efforts to restore a democratically elected government by the Burmese people. Condemns the barbaric violence being perpetrated against civilians by Burma’s security forces. Peaceful The killings of protesters, students, workers, labour leaders, health workers and children have shaken the conscience of the international community. “

Tye’s office said the US was immediately “prohibiting all trade with Burma under the 2013 Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.” Under this agreement, the two countries were cooperating with each other on the fronts of trade and investment so that Myanmar could be integrated with the global economy. The deal was a reward for the Army’s decision to allow the country to return to democracy some time ago, but the process was abruptly halted by last month’s military coup.

This declaration does not mean that trade between the two countries will be completely halted, but the US is also imposing separate economic sanctions on Myanmar. For example, the United States and Britain had already banned two groups of Myanmar military-controlled companies. On the latest steps of the US, White House Press Secretary Jane Saki has said that Burma has also been imposed export restrictions and has added many companies of many countries to the commercial blacklist.

He said, “We continue to work with our friends, partners and institutions of our thinking that match our thinking. Together we are denouncing the military’s footsteps, demanding immediate restoration of democracy, and They are also demanding to fix the accountability of those forcibly grabbing power. ” By the way, there is no special trade between the two countries. Last year, Myanmar was America’s 84th largest partner in the trade of goods such as vehicles and machines.

In Myanmar, the US simply exported products worth $ 338 million and imported goods worth one billion dollars from there. But the United States and other rich countries import clothes and household items made in Myanmar factories on a large scale. Most of these factories belong to companies of other countries, which have led to the modernization of the country’s backward economy and have given jobs to millions of people.

Meanwhile, the number of people killed in Myanmar due to violent suppression of protesters by the army has crossed 500. More than 100 protesters were killed in the last weekend. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed to form a united global front to put pressure on the army.
