Gray Hill man fined 10k for cannabis

A Gray Hill man now has a $10,000 debt to the state having admitted to the possession of 497 grams of cannabis.

Troy Christian was caught with the controlled drug in his bedroom on November 20 and he and his partner,Johana Hernandez, were arrested and charged for the crime. 

Christian appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel-Edwards today in the All Saints Magistrate’s court and pleaded guilty to the charge.

But his partner pleaded not guilty and was subsequently set free when the prosecution withdrew the charge. 

The 44 year old father of 8 now has to pay 10 monthly installments of $1000 starting December 23.

If he fails to pay, he will spend 10 months behind bars.

A further $6000 is also owed by Deon Lloyd who pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and intent to transfer in the St.John’s Magistrates’ Court today.

The Lower Ottos resident tried to hide the 199 grams of cannabis from the police when they came to his home.

But the drugs valued at $1960 were found and he was arrested and charged.

Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh reprimanded him for possession of the drug but fined him the aforementioned monies for intent to transfer said drugs.

Lloyd has until March 1 to pay or he will be imprisoned for 8 months.
