Residents criticize Prime Minister’s response to eulogy as tacky and unnecessary and chide ‘comrades’ for personal attacks

Critics are referring to Prime Minister Gaston’s Browne apparent response to MP Asot Michael’s “Were You There” speech as tacky and unnecessary.

In the course of delivering the eulogy on behalf of Sir Rupert Philo’s family during his official funeral today, October 19, Michael posed the question “Were You There?” while speaking to a number of issues facing the late calypsonian.

The MP accused the Antigua Labour Party – of which Sir Rupert was an avid supporter – of not coming to his rescue on many occasions, after he had stood with the party numerous times.

However, when Prime Minister Browne rose for the second scripture reading, he first delivered a jab to Michael before addressing the Bible chapter. Browne seemed very upset and stomped off the stage after the reading said a supporter of Sir Rupert.

“Normally, his bodyguard places the script in front of him and picks it up when he’s finished; but today Gaston grabbed up the script and stormed off,” the woman says.

Another resident says that Browne did not have to make reference to the eulogy, since it was neither the time nor place to respond, especially before reading a scripture.

He says the Prime Minister always wants to have the last say, and that Michael did not name anyone in his speech.  “So why did he feel the need to respond?” the man asks.

“A guilty conscience really needs no accuser,” the resident concludes.

He says both Labour Party members should be ashamed to have used that forum to address personal issues.
