Union Questions “$2M Christmas Cheer”

The former LIAT employees’ union has criticized the government of Antigua and Barbuda’s over its $2 million offer.

The government in a press release from the Office of the Prime Minister stated it has  dispatched $2 million E.C to LIAT’s administrator to be distributed amongst  former workers with the regional carrier..

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union stated on Tuesday that neither the eligible employees nor the Union was informed of the compensation until the news release.

Furthermore, the Union claims “this payment is a compassionate payment that is exaggerated, and that the government appears to be bullying employees into accepting whatever is offered.”

The Union further claim that the government may have a hidden agenda.

The Union is also expressing concern since there is  no information on how the “so-called Christmas cheer” will be distributed.

the Union claim that the lack of consultation is wreaking havoc on the situation and creates doubts about the government’s seriousness in resolving the issue of the legal entitlements owed to employees.

The Union concluded by urging the government to properly engage employees and their Union to identify practical solutions.
