Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has secured a second consecutive term in office after his ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) achieved a commanding victory in Thursday’s general election.
According to preliminary results from Grenada’s Parliamentary Elections Office, the NDC captured 14 of the 15 seats in the country’s House of Representatives, securing more than 60 per cent of the vote.
Mitchell defeated former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David, who contested the election under the Democratic People’s Movement.
The result represents a significant endorsement of Mitchell’s leadership and provides his administration with a strong parliamentary position as it prepares to begin another term.
Among the priorities outlined by Mitchell are modernising Grenada’s economy, strengthening healthcare services and reducing youth unemployment.
Regional leaders, including representatives from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, have congratulated Mitchell following his victory.
The election involved voters across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, with more than 97,000 people registered to participate.
The outcome places considerable responsibility on the incoming administration to deliver on its promises and address the economic and social concerns affecting Grenadians.
