Police in Saint Kitts and Nevis have issued a warning to motorists and members of the public about unauthorised transportation services being advertised through social media platforms and WhatsApp.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force says it has observed individuals offering paid transportation services using privately registered vehicles.

Some operators reportedly advertise their services under descriptions such as “Uber” and other ride services, despite using vehicles registered for private rather than commercial transportation.

In a statement issued on November 1, police explained that privately registered vehicles carrying standard private motor insurance do not automatically qualify to transport passengers commercially.

Authorities are reminding individuals who intend to offer transportation services for payment that they must first obtain the necessary authorisations, vehicle registration and appropriate commercial insurance coverage.

Police have also warned passengers about the potential consequences of using unauthorised transportation providers.

In the event of an accident, passengers travelling in vehicles without the proper commercial insurance could encounter difficulties when seeking compensation for injuries or property damage.

Residents and visitors are therefore being encouraged to verify that transportation providers and their vehicles are properly authorised before accepting paid rides.

The warning comes as authorities seek to ensure that transportation services operate within the country’s legal and insurance requirements.
