Grenada’s election campaign is reaching a critical stage as the leaders of the country’s three main political parties prepare to participate in a national debate ahead of the November 5 general election.
The debate, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at the Grenada Trade Centre in St. George’s, is expected to give voters an opportunity to hear the parties explain their positions on issues affecting the country.
The participants are Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of the National Democratic Congress, Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre of the New National Party, and Peter David of the Democratic People’s Movement.
According to the published report, the two-hour programme is expected to include 90 minutes of structured debate. Topics include the economy, the cost of living, healthcare, education, employment, governance and accountability.
The debate comes just eight days before voters head to the polls to elect representatives to Grenada’s 15-seat House of Representatives.
The NDC and NNP are contesting all 15 constituencies, while the DPM is contesting nine, according to reports on the election.
The event gives Grenadians an opportunity to compare the candidates’ priorities and proposals before making their decisions at the ballot box. The effectiveness of those proposals, particularly in addressing household expenses, public services and employment opportunities, is likely to be an important consideration for voters.
