Government Spent Over US$76,000 on Child’s Medical Care

More than US$76,000 has been spent on a child’s medical care, including 38 days of specialised treatment in Martinique and two visits by a neurosurgeon from Trinidad and Tobago, according to the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs.

The figures were disclosed in a statement responding to concerns raised in a letter to the editor about the child’s medical care, amid public fundraising appeals for overseas treatment.

The Ministry confirmed that the Medical Benefits Scheme has provided more than US$76,000 in direct medical costs to date.

The child was flown to Martinique for 38 days of specialised treatment, while a neurosurgeon from Trinidad and Tobago travelled to Antigua on two occasions to assist with the case. Each visit by the specialist cost approximately US$20,000.

Despite these interventions and efforts to explore further treatment options, medical advice received from specialists locally and overseas indicated that no additional intervention could be offered through the avenues explored.

The Ministry said treatment decisions must be guided by the professional judgment of qualified physicians and specialists, acknowledging the difficult circumstances facing the child and family.

It added that the family has been involved in detailed discussions about the child’s condition, potential outcomes and available medical options to ensure they understand the clinical position and remain part of the decision-making process.

The statement also recognised the public’s concern and desire to help the family, emphasising the importance of compassion and dignity in addressing the child’s medical needs.

The Ministry encouraged continued support for the child and family, reaffirming the importance of the health and well-being of the nation’s children.
