Police in Regional Division 4‘B’ are investigating the theft of approximately 90 feet of copper cable, valued at about $1.62 million, from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, East Bank Demerara.
According to investigators, the theft occurred sometime between August 23 and September 1, 2026.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bridge is outfitted with LED lighting mounted on steel poles along the high span. The lights, powered by a generator located beneath the bridge, are used to display various colours during national and special observances and were last activated on August 23.
At around 6:30 p.m. on August 31, an electrical maintenance engineer attempted to illuminate the bridge in the colours of the Trinidad and Tobago flag in observance of that country’s Independence Anniversary. However, only the lights on the northern side of the bridge were functioning.
The following morning, at approximately 9:00 a.m., the engineer and his team inspected the southern side and discovered that about 90 feet of 4/350 KCMIL copper cable had been cut and removed from a metal trunking box.
The incident was reported to the Providence Police Station at about 9:30 a.m., after which detectives visited and processed the scene.
Police said CCTV footage is currently being reviewed as investigations continue.
