Police in Regional Division #3 are investigating an alleged armed robbery in which approximately $23 million in cash was stolen from a hardware store at Public Road, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, on Friday evening.
According to police, the robbery occurred at about 6:20 p.m. when five masked men entered the premises. Four of the suspects were allegedly armed with what appeared to be firearms.
A 29-year-old Chinese national and businessman reported the incident to police.
Initial investigations indicate that the suspects gained access to the property by climbing over the southern fence from the direction of the Demerara River.
The men allegedly entered the building and held three Chinese nationals hostage before removing approximately $23 million in cash that was reportedly stored under a bed.
The suspects subsequently escaped through the southern section of a back fence.
Police said CCTV footage has been reviewed and several persons have been questioned as investigations continue.
No arrests have been announced.
Investigations into the robbery remain ongoing.
