A family is publicly calling for a review of how police handled a series of break-in incidents at their home, saying they no longer feel safe after experiencing three separate intrusions, including one in which an intruder successfully entered the property.
In a public statement, the family said the latest attempted break-in was the second in recent weeks and the third incident overall. They said police responded on each occasion, but expressed disappointment with how the most recent report was handled.
According to the family’s account, the responding officer repeatedly questioned whether the women living in the home had a boyfriend or any man who may have been visiting the residence, despite being told that this was not the case.
The family also raised concerns about their home’s security system, claiming they had previously informed police that their surveillance cameras had been tampered with. During the latest incident, they said all of the cameras suddenly went blank, leading them to believe whoever is targeting the property may have knowledge of the security system.
They described the situation as deeply unsettling and said they were particularly troubled after allegedly being told by the responding officer that because he “didn’t see anything,” there was little he could do to assist.
“As victims who have now experienced multiple incidents, including one successful break-in, we expected our concerns to be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly,” the statement said. “Instead, we were left feeling dismissed at a time when we were already frightened and vulnerable.”
Despite their criticism of the response, the family stressed that they were not seeking to discredit the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda as a whole. They acknowledged that many officers carry out their duties professionally, but argued that every report of a break-in or attempted break-in should be treated with urgency, empathy and a thorough investigation.
The family is now calling on the Police Administration to review the handling of the matter, ensure the incidents receive the attention they deserve, and provide the support and protection they believe is necessary before a more serious incident occurs.
“We simply want to feel safe in our own home,” the family said, expressing hope that speaking publicly would prompt meaningful action.
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has not publicly responded to the family’s allegations.
