City South natives – at home and abroad – welcome addition of Franz deFreitas to the UPP slate

Calls and messages of support for Franz C. deFreitas have been pouring in, following the announcement of his candidacy on the United Progressive Party’s ticket.

Earlier today, September 18, the Party announced that it had made a substitution, replacing Michael Burton – who ran in St. John’s City South in the 2018 General Elections – with deFreitas, a native of the constituency.

DeFreitas’ candidacy is being hailed by supporters across the country, who see the choice as “a good move” and the transition as “professional and seamless.”

A warm welcome has been extended by many in the Ovals community, as well, including Mervyn Richards, who represented the constituency in the 2014 national polls, and by Branch Chair Delia Charles.

Other Antiguans abroad have already contacted the Party to pledge their support, with one US resident promising to come home to campaign for deFreitas.

The fearless, straight-shooting deFreitas, who will go up against the incumbent, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, in the next General Elections, is promising to restore the glory of City South, which has produced many prominent citizens, including National Hero Sir Isaac Vivian Richards.

This morning, Harold Lovell, the UPP Political Leader, explained to the Progressive FM audience that Burton has been undergoing medical treatment abroad for some time, and that it would be unreasonable to impose the rigours of a political campaign on him anytime soon.

“Although Bro. Michael is not with us in this particular contest, he will remain a valued part of our team,” Lovell assured supporters.

DeFreitas is expected to be ratified, along with his 15 colleagues, at this weekend’s meeting of the UPP’s General Council, making them full-fledged Candidates.
