Former Prime Minister, Hon. Winston Baldwin Spencer has declined the Government’s offer of a knighthood in this year’s (2020) Independence Celebrations.
In a letter dispatched to Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne moments ago, Mr. Spencer states: “in as much as it could be rationalized that the offer is justified and deserving, I must, however, for personal reasons, humbly and respectfully decline the said offer at this time”.
In the letter, obtained by Antiguan Trumpet, former PM Spencer thanked PM Browne “nonetheless for the consideration.” Minister of Information, Hon. Melford Melford Nicholas announced in the post Cabinet press briefing that the former Prime Minister was under consideration for a knighthood.
Had he accepted the offer to be knighted, Hon. Winston Baldwin Spencer would have joined father of the nation and Prime Minister, the late Vere Cornwall Bird, former Premier Sir George Herbert Walter, former PM, Sir Lester Bryant Bird and Sir Robin Yearwood as political leaders who have been conferred the honorific “Sir.”
