AG assures public gov’t working to arrest crime, offers safety advice

Following two recent armed robberies and the fatal shooting of a teenager allegedly linked to one of these incidents, the country’s National Security Minister has assured the public that both the government and law enforcement authorities are taking all necessary measures to safeguard the well-being of citizens and residents.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin during an interview with Observer Media said the incident in which the young man lost his life is unfortunate.

Sir Steadroy assured the public that police presence will increase in local communities.  He added that members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) will also be on the road.

Sir Steadroy said extra security will be provided, especially during the carnival celebrations, and on those nights when events are being staged.

“As the minister responsible for public safety, I wish to assure the public that the police and law enforcement in general have the matter under control.  And that’s the reason why, when this young robber attempted to steal, that there was law enforcement at the time on the spot and took corrective measures at that time.  And that’s the reason also why the government decided in Cabinet yesterday to make certain that the law with respect to young people be maintained.

“The thought was that perhaps because of the season, one ought to relax the laws. But having met with the law enforcement authorities, we were persuaded that it was not proper so to do at this time. And quite rightly so too,” Sir Steadroy said.

He continued, “Because last evening, a group of young thugs got together, went and robbed some place, and tried to give false information to the police.  I shan’t say any more on that at this time, since the police will be taking appropriate actions in the circumstances. I’m asking all persons at this time not to worry.”

The National Security Minister offered some advice to members of the public on staying safe, including parking vehicles in areas that are well lit.

He said persons should not leave bags or other important items inside vehicles; and when leaving home ensure you notify neighbours that you are not there.

“Let them keep an eye out for you.  And remember, be your neighbour’s keeper.  In addition to that too, if you observe that there are strange movements around the community, please do not hesitate to contact the nearest police station.

“There are many, many detailed police officers are in marked vehicles all over the country.  We think we know where these hotspots are and we have assigned individuals to patrol those areas frequently.  See and report strange activities.  Be your neighbour’s keeper.

Meanwhile, referencing Wednesday’s (July 16) incident in which a 16-year-old, who was shot dead, was out during curfew hours, Sir Steadroy had a message for parents, highlighting that they face penalties if they allow their children to be on the road during curfew hours.

When asked about Saturday’s (July 20) Teenage Pageant event which normally attracts scores of young people who are normally not accompanied by parents, Sir Steadroy said they are allowed to attend the show to support their respective schools.

However, he said before arriving at the venue and after they should be in the company of an adult.

The public safety minister said parents should be aware that the police are committed to enforcing the curfew strenuously, strictly, and without exception.

Sir Steadroy noted that if children are found unsupervised on the streets between 10pm and 6am, they will be taken to the police station and released into the custody of their parents.

However, he stressed that repeat occurrences will result in parents being summoned to court and dealt with.

“Take care of your children.  Monitor their actions.  Watch what they wear. Prevent them from drinking alcohol.  Be parents and make certain that you help to preserve peace and security in Antigua and Barbuda,” Sir Steadroy advised.
