The newly appointed executive members of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus in Antigua and Barbuda are setting ambitious goals to enhance the academic and social experiences of students for the 2025–2026 academic year.
Students’ Guild leaders Dlia Evans and Shakeem Gomes have unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening postgraduate support and fostering community ties across the UWI Global Campus.
Evans, who will focus on academic development, plans to launch a targeted series of monthly workshops on academic writing, research development, and publishing. She also intends to introduce a “Postgrad Career Connect” series, offering both virtual and in-person sessions on résumé building, career readiness, and securing internships. Additionally, a quarterly networking mixer is being planned to encourage inter-campus collaboration.
Meanwhile, Gomes will prioritize student engagement and community-building through fundraising drives, social activities, and exploring financial support options for students. His goal is to deepen connections among the campus’s global student body.
Gomes explained that the Guild aims to ensure students feel seen and heard, even in a virtual environment, emphasizing that creating spaces for interaction is essential to fostering unity and a sense of belonging.
Both executives acknowledged the challenges many online students face while balancing work, family, and studies. Evans, herself a parent and working professional, highlighted the importance of time management and praised UWI Global Campus for offering flexible payment plans to assist students with financial difficulties.
Looking ahead, both leaders emphasized their commitment to advocating for students, enhancing academic support, and promoting greater inclusivity and connectivity across the UWI Global Campus. They also encouraged prospective students to apply through UWI’s online application platform, noting the flexibility and accessibility the Global Campus model offers.
