Foreign Affairs Minister EP Chet Greene said the government has not received any official communication from the United States regarding potential travel sanctions, as concerns mount over a leaked memo that could have significant consequences for the twin-island nation.
The leaked document, said to be signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, gives those nations 60 days to respond to US concerns surrounding immigration control, identity verification, and national security.
At the heart of those concerns are the Citizenship by Investment Programmes, which allow people to acquire nationality with minimal residency requirements.
According to the report, governments named in the memo have until 8 am next Wednesday to submit an initial action plan.
While no date has been set for enforcement, the US appears willing to waive sanctions for countries that show cooperation, especially on deportation procedures and so-called “safe third country” agreements.
If implemented, these restrictions would mark an expansion of a recent executive order already affecting countries like Iran, Haiti, and Sudan.
