Guyanese will go to the polls on September 1

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has officially announced that Guyana’s next General and Regional Elections will be held on September 1, 2025.

The announcement was made during his address at the 59th Independence Anniversary celebrations on Sunday evening at the Albion Sports Complex in Region Six.

President Ali informed citizens that he will soon issue the proclamation for the dissolution of Parliament, marking the formal start of the electoral process. The dissolution of Parliament is a constitutional requirement and the first major step in the lead-up to national elections.

“The Constitution of Guyana mandates” that general elections be held within a specific timeline once Parliament is dissolved, and the President’s declaration sets the country firmly on course toward a new electoral cycle.

While no further details were shared during the brief announcement, the declaration comes amid a politically active period, with parties expected to ramp up their campaigns in the coming weeks.

The forthcoming elections will decide the composition of both the National Assembly and Regional Democratic Councils and are expected to draw significant public interest given Guyana’s rapid economic growth and evolving political landscape.

Meanwhile, the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has made clear its readiness to campaign on what it describes as a record of strong performance and inclusive development.

“I welcome President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s announcement of September 1st, 2025 as the date for General and Regional Elections,” said Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP. “As the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), I am proud to say that we are ready to deliver our message of continued progress to the people of Guyana in the upcoming election campaign.”

Jagdeo highlighted the government’s record since taking office in August 2020, pointing to early and swift action during the COVID-19 pandemic, the passage of an emergency budget within 40 days, and wide-ranging reforms aimed at reviving the economy.

“In just under five years, we have restored confidence in the economy and created thousands of jobs for the Guyanese people. From agriculture and infrastructure to energy, ICT, and tourism, we have driven broad-based, inclusive growth.”

The PPP emphasized major investments in healthcare, education, housing, and social welfare, including the distribution of thousands of house lots and the removal of taxes on essential items such as gasoline and diesel. Measures like subsidies on electricity and water, liberalisation of the telecom sector, and reduced mortgage rates were among those aimed at “putting more money into people’s pockets.”

“Importantly, we did not just deliver on our 2020–2025 manifesto — we exceeded it by listening to the needs of our people and taking decisive action,” Jagdeo stated. “We implemented initiatives that ensured all sections of society benefited, from miners and farmers to public servants, youths, entrepreneurs, and ordinary families in every community.”

Looking ahead, the PPP promises an ambitious agenda for the next term, including the creation of thousands of new jobs, the development of medical tourism, biotech, and IT hubs, annual distribution of 5,000 house lots and new climate-resilient communities such as Silica City, major infrastructure projects and support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

“We are ready for the 2025 Election. And we are prepared to win it for the people of Guyana,” Jagdeo declared.

He also took aim at the Parliamentary Opposition, accusing them of “relentless obstruction” and warning voters of what he called their “characteristic campaign of lies, racism and division.”

“The PNCR/APNU/AFC/WPA, in whatever form they present themselves to the electorate, have no track record to stand on – no record of delivering for the Guyanese people – and nothing credible to offer the electorate,” Jagdeo charged.
