Friends of Cobbs Cross School organisation donates laptops to school

The Friends of Cobbs Cross School donated six laptop computers to the primary school yesterday, fulfilling a commitment made to the school nearly a year ago.

The donation was made possible through contributions from several local businesses and community members, including Flatties, Los Cabronas, Bigs Rental Car, Titi’s Car Rental, Lobster Hut, and Covent Garden Supermarket.

Dr Deborah Akande, Secretary of the Friends of Cobbs Cross School, expressed enthusiasm about the contribution during the handover ceremony.

“We’re so excited that we are donating six computers to Cobbs Cross School that I know will go a long way toward helping the children,” she said.

The community group was formed following a town hall meeting where the school’s principal highlighted the institution’s needs.

Alan Weston, President of the Friends of Cobbs Cross Primary School, emphasized that the donation would not have been possible without the support of local businesses and friends of Antigua and Barbuda.

“The credit goes to the businesspeople and the people who made this possible today that we are contributing something to the local school,” Weston told Observer media.

Individual donors included Amanda Nagy of Flatties, Danny Valente of Los Cabronas, Kirk Browne of Bigs Rental Car, Telbert Thwaites of Titi Rental Car, Justin White of Lobster Hut, and Terry Browne of Covent Garden Supermarket.

Several community residents also contributed to the initiative, including Gary and Jan Marshall, Jane Ayers, and Joanne Lighthizer, a local business owner.

International support came from Pippa Hiscox of the United Kingdom and Devin McShane, a frequent visitor to the island.

According to Dr Akande, school administrators will determine where the computers will be most effectively utilized within the institution.

This donation follows previous contributions made by the group, including a printer and school supplies provided last year.

“This isn’t just the end here. We plan to continue to try to see what other needs of the school there are,” Dr Akande said.

The Friends of Cobbs Cross School are also planning a black-tie fundraising event later this year to generate additional support for the primary school.
