The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Prime Minister’s Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) have launched a partnership aimed at improving financial access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Antigua and Barbuda, with a special focus on businesses owned by women and youth.
The initiative, titled “Optimizing Innovative Finance for Underserved Groups to Build Resilience and Accelerate the Achievement of the SDGs,” addresses one of the most significant challenges faced by small businesses in the twin-island nation—limited access to capital and financing options.
As part of the Joint Sustainable Development Goals Multi-Partner Trust Fund, the collaboration hosted interactive focus groups last week that brought together stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and policy leaders to discuss financial inclusion strategies.
On April 2, participants gathered at the Trade Winds Hotel for a session cantered on “Reducing the Risks Associated with Financing MSMEs,” where they explored pathways to reduce financial risks and develop new models to support marginalised entrepreneurs.
The discussions continued on April 4 at the John E St. Luce Conference Centre under the theme “Empowering MSMEs: Fostering Growth for Women and Youth,” with the EDP serving as both a partnering host and expert panellist.

“This initiative is not just a policy discussion—it’s a promise,” said EDP Board Director Caleb Gardiner. “A promise to ensure no entrepreneur is left behind because of gender, age, geography, or economic circumstance. Our partnership with UNDP proves that transformation becomes inevitable when we combine vision with action.”
The outreach extended to Barbuda on April 9, where representatives from both organizations met with the Barbuda Council to discuss strategies tailored to the sister island’s unique economic environment. Community consultations were conducted with existing entrepreneurs and aspiring businesswomen, ensuring that implementation plans reflect real needs on the ground.
Jennifer Joseph, UNDP Joint Programme Coordinator, emphasized the initiative’s importance for the local business landscape.
“This collaboration presents a valuable opportunity for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Antigua and Barbuda to fully leverage the diverse range of programs and services the Entrepreneurial Development Programme provides,” Joseph said. “This initiative is designed to enhance access to innovative financial solutions specifically aimed at underserved groups, focusing on supporting businesses owned by women and youth.”
The multi-agency effort, supported by UNDP, UN Women Caribbean, and the International Telecommunication Union, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to gender equality, economic growth, and technological innovation.
