The government of Antigua and Barbuda is making a significant investment in local meat production as part of its broader strategy to enhance food security and reduce reliance on imported meat products. Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced plans to purchase abattoirs for poultry and small ruminants, aiming to increase local meat supply and boost agricultural self-sufficiency.
“We have to grow more food,” Browne stated. “We are one of the most vulnerable countries in the world when it comes to food security, and if the food boats don’t come here for a few weeks, we are in trouble.”
The initiative includes constructing new processing facilities and acquiring modern equipment to improve efficiency in meat production. Browne noted that the government has secured approximately EC$3.8 million from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank to support food security initiatives.
“We are making these investments to ensure that Antigua and Barbuda can produce a substantial portion of its own food supply,” he said. “We will also provide financial support, including small grants, to encourage farmers and entrepreneurs to expand their agricultural operations.”
The government’s strategy aligns with efforts to promote domestic consumption of locally sourced foods, encouraging residents to choose homegrown products over imported alternatives. Browne emphasized that increasing fish production and processing seasonal fruits like mangoes for extended use will also be part of the country’s food security approach.
The move comes amid rising concerns over global supply chain disruptions, trade policies, and inflationary pressures that could impact the affordability and availability of imported goods.
“We need to become more self-reliant,” Browne said. “We are working to ensure that our people have access to high-quality, locally produced food at stable prices.”
The planned investments are expected to support local farmers, create job opportunities in agriculture and food processing, and strengthen the resilience of Antigua and Barbuda’s food supply chain.
