The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) is reportedly in talks with a former coach of the Dominican Republic senior men’s team, as they hunt for a new men’s head coach.
This is according to the body’s technical director and former national player, Sowerby Gomes, who stopped short of naming the coach, but confirmed that dialog is ongoing with the Mexican professional.
“They have gone through the process of interviewing various coaches and the one they are looking at right now, he has been speaking with the executive and as a result, the executive is in the process of making a decision. It’s an overseas-based coach,” he said.
The coach in question has also reportedly worked with the St Kitts & Nevis senior men’s team and he is expected to take up the ABFA role in early March. His first assignment is expected to be in June when Antigua and Barbuda play away to both Honduras and Cuba in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The news surfaced that the FA and England-based Mikele Leigertwood have amicably parted ways. In December last year, UK-based Redding Football Club, announced that Leigertwood has been promoted from the team’s under-18 staff to the First Team coaching setup.
Leigertwood, after making 11 appearances for Antigua and Barbuda, assumed the head coach role back in January of 2021.
