Rahkeem Cornwall Confident in Hurricanes’ Title Chances After Dominant Victory

Leeward Islands Hurricanes captain and former West Indies spinner Rahkeem Cornwall is backing his team to go all the way in this year’s West Indies Championships following their emphatic 402-run victory over West Indies Academy at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG).

“It was a good win. The way we set up the game from day one put us in a strong position,” Cornwall said. “I think the team will grow from strength to strength, especially with a few guys returning from Test cricket. We have a real chance of winning the championship.”

The Hurricanes dismantled West Indies Academy, bowling them out for just 100 in their second innings while chasing an improbable 502-run target. Vice-captain Hayden Walsh Jr starred with the ball, taking 5 for 24 in 6.5 overs, while Cornwall played a key supporting role with figures of 4 for 41 in 13 overs. Cornwall finished the match with overall figures of 7 for 74.

He noted that players are still adjusting to the Kookaburra ball, which has replaced the traditional Duke ball this season.

“We just have to be more patient with the Kookaburra ball because it behaves a little differently,” Cornwall explained. “The batsmen are getting starts but need to push on and convert those into hundreds.”

The Hurricanes showcased their batting depth, declaring their second innings at 289 for 9, with three players scoring half-centuries. Earlier, they posted 358 all out in 103.2 overs before dismissing the Academy for 145 in their first innings.

The Hurricanes now turn their attention to their next match against the Jamaica Scorpions, set to begin on February 5 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
