Junior prison officers at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP) staged a protest on Monday, demanding long-overdue payments and addressing staffing concerns. Their frustration stems from repeated delays, including a missed November 1, 2024, deadline for a $400 monthly salary increase approved by Cabinet.
National Security Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin intervened, assuring officers that payments would be processed by February 17, 2025. However, Superintendent of Prisons Trevor Pennyfeather raised concerns that the increase would create only a $100 gap between junior and senior officers, calling for a broader salary adjustment estimated to cost under $10,000.
Prison officers await further updates, emphasizing the need for a fair and sustainable wage structure.
