Junior officers at His Majesty’s Prison have announced plans to begin industrial action on Monday, February 3, 2025, in response to unpaid salary increases and mounting operational concerns.
In a formal letter to Superintendent Lt. Col Trevor Pennyfeather, the officers demanded the immediate payment of a promised $400 salary increase, retroactive to November 2024, and the full disbursement of a double salary payment due by December 31, 2024. They highlighted disparities between junior and senior officers, particularly regarding workload and responsibilities, citing an unfair system where junior officers endure double and triple shifts while senior officers work standard five-day schedules.
The officers also criticized senior staff for a lack of leadership and support, stating that junior officers face significant risks in managing inmates, including those with mental health challenges, often without adequate resources or training.
The letter, copied to National Security Minister Stedroy Benjamin and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, warns that unless their demands are met, the protest action will continue indefinitely.
Prison authorities and government officials have yet to respond.
