Government Not Considering Shorter Work Week, Says Labour Minister

Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin has firmly stated that the Gaston Browne administration is not entertaining discussions on a four-day work week. He cited numerous factors, including pay rates and labor agreements, as significant considerations.

“It’s too early to think about such a policy,” Benjamin remarked, stressing that no formal discussions have taken place regarding this matter.

While acknowledging that some countries have had success with a shorter work week, he questioned its applicability in small nations like Antigua and Barbuda. “We may explore it in the future, but it’s not on our agenda today,” he said.

Ralph Potter, President of the People’s Trade Union, noted that he intends to bring up the topic in discussions with Labour Department officials in the coming days.
