Prime Minister Browne Advocates for Action Against Non-Communicable Diseases at UN Meeting

Antigua and Barbuda showcased its global influence on Tuesday during a significant meeting at the United Nations, addressing the pressing issue of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that burden many small states. The event, co-sponsored by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the World Health Organization, was led by Prime Minister Gaston Browne alongside UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus.

Prime Minister Browne was joined by Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, a dedicated advocate for NCD prevention, and Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Walton Webson. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the 79th General Assembly, preparing for the upcoming 2025 UN High-Level meeting on NCDs.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Browne expressed optimism for a future free from the threat of NCDs. He highlighted the substantial investments his government has made in combating diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. Notably, he shared plans to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030 through community-level screening initiatives.

Browne also addressed mental health, urging global leaders to prioritize this critical issue. Reflecting on the struggles of his late mother with mental health conditions, he called for a dedicated high-level UN meeting to focus on mental health challenges. His heartfelt appeal resonated with attendees, including U.S. Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs Loyce Pace, who committed to enhancing efforts in this area.

The success of the meeting was aided by First Secretary Claxton Duberry, who coordinated the event in collaboration with various UN offices, along with other members of the Antigua and Barbuda Mission. Climate Ambassador Ruleta Camacho Thomas was also present, engaging in various UN activities.

Antigua and Barbuda continues to position itself as a proactive leader in global health discussions, striving for meaningful change in the fight against NCDs and mental health challenges.
