During a parliamentary debate on a new loitering bill targeting minors, Senate Majority Leader Samantha Marshall highlighted the need for a national discussion on the age of consent, currently set at 16.
The bill aims to hold parents accountable for their children found loitering without valid reasons between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with potential fines and penalties for repeat offenses.
Marshall argued that if minors are restricted from voting and driving until 18, the age of consent should be reconsidered to reflect these legal boundaries.
She called for proactive dialogue on these issues to prevent future contradictions in the law, echoing similar sentiments from Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle.
