New Anti-Gang Legislation Targets Possession of Bulletproof Vests and Masks

The Senate’s Anti-Gang Bill introduces severe penalties for those found with gang-related items, aiming to tackle rising violence.

In a pivotal debate today, Senate Majority Leader Samantha Marshall spotlighted the stringent penalties outlined in the newly passed Anti-Gang Bill, targeting items often linked to gang activity, such as bulletproof vests and ski masks. The bill introduces heavy consequences for individuals found in possession of these items if linked to criminal intent.

Marshall warned that anyone using a bulletproof vest or mask with the intention of committing a crime could face up to 15 years in prison. She voiced her concern about the rising trend of young people wearing hoodies and ski masks in public, particularly in the region’s warm climate, suggesting it might signal gang affiliation or an effort to hide their identities.

“I can’t comprehend why young people opt for these items in such heat,” she stated. “It raises serious questions about their intentions.”

The bill’s approval marks a significant move in the government’s fight against gang violence, receiving bipartisan support. Lawmakers also emphasized the need for personal and parental responsibility to address these issues beyond mere legislation.
