The Guild of Students at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus has expressed sorrow following the death of 24-year-old Akeykjah Nibbs, who was fatally shot in the Ottos community on Sunday.
In a tribute shared on social media, the Guild described Nibbs as a member of its university community and extended condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.
The organisation said the loss had affected members of the university community and expressed hope that those grieving would find comfort in their memories of him.
Nibbs was identified as the victim of a shooting incident in which a vehicle was reportedly attacked by two individuals who allegedly emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire.
Earlier reports indicated that he was travelling in a vehicle with a female companion when the incident occurred.
He reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The vehicle was also reportedly struck by multiple bullets.
There have been additional reports suggesting that the occupants may have been followed before the shooting. However, those circumstances had not been officially confirmed in the report.
The condition of the female companion was not immediately established.
The Guild’s tribute adds to the expressions of grief following the young man’s death, as members of the university community and his loved ones remember him.
Further information concerning the circumstances surrounding the shooting is awaited.
